What is Botox® and is it safe?

Botox® Cosmetic

Botox is a purified protein. It is derived from clostridium botulinum, and safely, effectively tames troublesome muscles. Using a tiny micro-needle, Dr. Lezaic injects a very small amount of Botox into precise locations on the face. Standard areas of treatment are the vertical lines between your eyebrows, forehead lines, and lines at the corners of your eyes (crow’s feet). Botox has been used safely and effectively for over ten years to treat ophthalmological and neurological disorders, including migraines and facial twitches. In 2007, over 2.7 million people were injected with Botox – and the number only continues to grow. Laser Skin Solutions Jacksonville buys its Botox directly from Allergan, the only FDA-approved source in the U.S.

While we know you’re invested in safety, you’re probably anxious to see what Botox will do for you. Try clicking the treatment visualizer button to the left. With the visualizer, you are able to upload an image of your own face, and then see Botox’s potential effects on your skin – getting you all the more excited for treatment.

Prior to treatment, we will perform a consultation. This appointment gives us the chance to determine how much Botox you need, and where the injections should be made. Once those details are in place, the procedure takes less than 15 minutes. Since there is no downtime, you can receive treatment at lunchtime and immediately return to your regularly scheduled activities or workday.

Botox is injected into a muscle responsible for facial movement. There, it blocks communication between the nerves and the muscle, forcing the muscle to remain relaxed. This leads to the overlying skin becoming smoother, with fewer lines and wrinkles.

After treatment, the skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract normally. You’re able to make the usual facial expressions, and you won’t look like you’re in someone else’s skin. Once present in at your nerve sites, Botox will help prevent future wrinkles from forming.

You’ll notice a change within just a few days of treatment. As time goes on, you’ll see the final results within two weeks.

As time passes, you’ll see preexisting wrinkles becoming smoother, and new wrinkles will be prevented from forming. This is Botox’s dual performance: taming the wrinkles you have, and keeping additional wrinkles at bay.

Botox’s effects usually last between 3-4 months. Depending on your skin, the injection location, and the amount of Botox, you’ll see unique results as your skin reacts. We advise patients to receive the first 3 treatments 12 weeks apart, and the next two treatments 16 weeks apart. This helps to create smooth skin without downtime.
