What is an IPL Photofacial?

IPL photofacial treatments use intense light beams to carry energy to the skin and subdermal layers. Intense pulsed light, abbreviated as IPL, is similar to laser skin treatment, but uses a broadband-spectrum light beam. Unlike a laser, the IPL instrument delivers targeted heat energy to specific tissues. This type of treatment is effective for diminishing the appearance of certain skin discolorations such as freckles, age spots and scars. Scar tissue and age spots often have a high concentration of melanin, and the energy from the IPL device heats up and destroys the melanin. It also helps kickstart a process whereby an increase in collagen production is experienced.

During the Consultation

When you come in for an initial consultation at our office, we will examine your skin and note the depth of any dark spots. Freckles, acne scars and age spots are usually superficial, meaning that they will absorb the energy from the IPL device. We will advise you on any cleansing procedures you should perform in the days leading up to the treatment.

How It Works

The IPL photofacial device can be calibrated to deliver the correct spread of wavelengths, and we adjust these controls according to the skin tone as well as the tone of the discolorations. We give you protective eye shades to wear during the procedure. This eliminates the possibility of any damage being caused to your eyes.

The device is directed at the skin, and the lamp is flashed for a few milliseconds. The light beams pass right through the epidermis and are absorbed by the darker, more dense tissue. The tissue heats up instantly, and any melanin is safely destroyed.

After Treatment

There is virtually no downtime or recovery period after treatment. You can resume most all of your normal activities at once. As the body absorbs and flushes out any destroyed tissue, the treated areas become more even in tone. Most of our clients report satisfactory results less than one week after undergoing an IPL photofacial treatment. The process is repeatable at regular intervals. We can schedule a follow-up visit to monitor the results and to determine whether a second treatment is necessary.
